The Forum is held annually under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at UN Headquarters in New York. The High-level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF) took place from Monday July 8 to Thursday July 18, 2024. This included a three-day ministerial segment of the forum from Monday, 15 July, to Wednesday, 17 July 2024 under the theme “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions.” Uganda’s delegation was led by the Rt. Hon Robinah Nabbanja the Prime Minister.

The Government of Uganda in partnership with Sight Savers International, UN Women convened a side event at Uganda the UN Conference Centre Conference Room B under auspices of the HLPF. The side event was organized under the theme Leaving No One Behind’ Experiences of SDG localization and the Leaving No One behind practices for accelerated delivery of SDGs in Uganda. Key to note was the need to strengthen documentation, monitoring and reporting and increasing transparency and accountability of PDM at local level.

Uganda delegates participated in several side events organized by other member Countries and partners. Among the side events attended were (i) a side event organized in by Forus, Tap Network, UNDP and Government of Nepal which discussed on means of achieving SDG 16 through inclusive decision making.   Uganda led by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs participated in a side event organized by Plan International.

Presentation of Statement on behalf of G77+China during the Opening session and General Debate at the High Level Political Forum

On the first day of the Ministerial session at the High Level Political Forum, the Rt. Hon Prime Minister presented a statement on behalf of the G77+China.

On behalf of the Group, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of fully implementing the Secretary General’s proposal for the SDG Stimulus for developing countries to tackle the high cost of debt and rising risks of debt distress, to enhance support to developing countries and to massively scale up affordable long-term financing for development and expand contingency financing to countries in need.

Uganda also held bilateral meetings including a courtesy call meeting with the President of the UN General Assembly, a meeting with Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Belarus, a meeting with the Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator and a meeting with the UN under-secretary General and executive secretary of Economic commission for Africa (UNECA).
