The Gender Equality Dialogue 2024, themed “Count Her In: Accelerating Gender Equality through Women Economic Empowerment and Financing for the SDGs,” convened on May 8th, 2024, at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Kampala, addressed critical aspects of gender equality in Uganda. The event, organized by the SDG Secretariat in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development, and the Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) with support from GIZ, brought together government officials, civil society, academia, and development partners to assess progress, identify challenges, and chart a path forward.

Keynote speakers, including Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and representatives from UN Women and the German Embassy, underscored the importance of women’s economic empowerment as a driver of sustainable development. The dialogue highlighted systemic barriers such as limited access to land, financial resources, and entrenched social norms that hinder gender equality. The event concluded with a strong call to action, highlighting the need for continuous engagement and collaboration to overcome gender disparities. It reiterated that achieving gender equality is not only a matter of justice but also a catalyst for broader socio-economic progress, essential for sustainable development in Uganda and globally. The dialogue underscored the shared responsibility of all sectors in society to support and accelerate the journey towards full gender parity.
On 15th May 2024, a consultation was held with Members of Parliament, facilitated by the Office of the Prime Minister. The consultation, attended by key government officials especially Members of Parliament, focused on reviewing Uganda’s progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in preparation for the country’s third Voluntary National Review (VNR). The Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable Development Goals (UPFSDGs), established to ensure alignment with the 2030 Agenda, played a pivotal role in the discussion. The consultation underscored the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach and the role of civil society in achieving the SDGs, aligning with Uganda’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and the Nationally Determined Contributions. The event highlighted the need for localized indicators and tailored development models to ensure effective and inclusive progress toward sustainable development.

On 23rd May 2024, a consultation with media stakeholders was held in Kampala to discuss Uganda’s third Voluntary National Review (VNR) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event, facilitated by the United Nations Association in Uganda (UNAU), aimed to engage media professionals, enhance their understanding of SDGs, and gather insights for improving reporting on these goals. The consultations highlighted the varying levels of awareness among media professionals, challenges in accessing reliable data, and the need for more training and resources. The consultation underscored the media’s critical role in driving sustainable development, advocating for the SDGs, and ensuring accountability. As the country continues to work towards the 2030 Agenda, it is essential to support and empower the media to engage effectively in the SDG discourse, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered.
