Uganda Data SDGs Factsheet at the ARFSD11 for SDGs of focus SDGs, 3, 5, 8, 11 and 17
Uganda presented a factsheet on its performance in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under review at the 11th Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD-11). The factsheet, prepared by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) in collaboration with partners, highlights achievements and persistent challenges in SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 5 – Gender Equality, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 14 – Life Below Water, and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being: Uganda has recorded notable progress in maternal and child health. Maternal mortality has declined to 207 deaths per 100,000 live births, while under-five mortality has reduced to 46 deaths per 1,000 live births. Immunization coverage has improved, and the proportion of births attended by skilled health personnel rose to 88.4%. However, neonatal deaths and rising road traffic accidents, claiming over 5,000 lives annually, remain serious concerns. Efforts against HIV, TB, malaria, and non-communicable diseases have yielded progress, although further investments in prevention and care are still needed
SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Uganda continues to close gender gaps through policies and legislation addressing gender-based violence and discrimination. Women now hold 34% of parliamentary seats, though challenges persist in land ownership and economic empowerment. Encouragingly, cases of intimate partner violence have reduced from 18% in 2016 to 12.8% in 2022. Yet, unpaid care work remains disproportionately shouldered by women, reflecting structural inequalities that require policy attention
SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: The economy remains resilient, though per capita GDP growth has slowed slightly to 2.1%. Informal employment dominates the labor force at 88%, with women disproportionately represented. Youth unemployment and child labor remain significant barriers to inclusive growth. The government, through Vision 2040 and NDP III, continues to prioritize industrialization, entrepreneurship, and skills development to create sustainable jobs for Uganda’s rapidly growing population
SDG 14 – Life Below Water: Although Uganda is landlocked, lakes and rivers play a vital role in livelihoods and food security. The fisheries sector contributes 3% to national GDP and 12% to agricultural GDP. However, the proportion of sustainable fish stocks has declined, raising concerns about overfishing and ecosystem degradation. Ongoing efforts aim to improve data on freshwater ecosystems, monitor plastic pollution, and expand protected aquatic areas
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Uganda underscores the importance of partnerships in mobilizing resources, enhancing capacity, and accessing technology. Domestic revenue now accounts for a growing share of the budget, while remittances continue to provide vital support to the economy. Engagement in regional blocs like the East African Community, expansion of public-private partnerships, and collaboration with international organizations are strengthening Uganda’s ability to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
