LOCALIZATION AND POPULARIZATION OF SDGS AT DISTRICT LEVEL

The 2020 VNR report and the 2021 SDG Progress Report indicated that there is identical inadequate awareness of the SDG framework even with those involved directly in implementation. This leads to leadership and policy loopholes and lack of awareness from the locals at individual, household, community and national level. The SDG Secretariat has therefore conducted fieldwork to assess the level of understanding and the implementation of SDG in the Local Governments and to identify champions and SDG focal persons per district. Over 75 districts were reached in the last three quarters of the FY 2020/2021. To support the Secretariat’s efforts in localization of the SDGs, UN Human Rights also worked with UNCDF to produce materials in more local languages. The SDGs are now translated into 13 local languages.

DEVELOPMENT OF SDG LOCALIZATION GUIDELINES

Given the important need for SDG localization of the 2030 Agenda by different stakeholders, the SDG Secretariat conceptualized an idea of and SDG localization guidelines. The localization guidelines will focus on supporting the Government together with the development partners to operationalize the new SDG Roadmap (2021-2025) which details strategic interventions to be undertaken as means of implementing SDGs. The guidelines will  describe key actions to be undertaken by All stakeholders at Central and Local Levels and development partners will implement and measure progress in regards to “(i) Communication, Localization, Popularization and advocacy of SDGs at all levels (ii) Planning and Mainstreaming of SDGs at all levels including Local Governments (iii) Data Generation, Analysis & Dissemination for SDGs at all levels (iv) Coordination, M&E and Reporting (v) Integrated Resource Mobilization and Financing of SDGs. The SDG Localization guidelines will therefore be an accelerator to implementation of the roadmap especially in guiding stakeholders at local government and communities.
