Uganda participated in the United Nations Conference on the “Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action, ‘Water for Sustainable Development’, 2018–2028” in New York, from 22nd to 24th  March 2023. The Conference focused on the sustainable development and integrated management of water resources for the achievement of social, economic and environmental objectives, the implementation and promotion of related Programmes and Projects, as well as on the furtherance of cooperation and partnerships at all levels.

The key recommendations for Uganda that emerged from the Conference include:

  • Support the institutionalization of data collection and monitoring within national systems;
  • Encourage innovation and experimentation through supportive government policy and regulation;
  • Strengthen existing institutions, fill institutional gaps;
  • Mobilize the Private Sector: make water-impact disclosure mandatory, and work with standard setters on due diligence and regulation of financial markets;
  • Ensure stronger water management, Sector Reforms and greater efficiency and coherence is overdue across the water energy-food-ecosystem (WEFE) nexus;
  • Leverage on the power of youth (inter-generational dialogues) indigenous communities (indigenous knowledge) and vulnerable groups in management and development of water resources.
